It attracts crowds like a rock star: clinging to its cliff as if by magic, Rocamadour will take your breath away (especially if you climb the steps on foot). It's beautiful, mystical and steeped in history... At the height of the season, you'll have to elbow your way between tourists, stalls and ice-cream vendors. Voted most beautiful village in France? Yes. Hanging over the Lot like a stage set? Yes. But behind its postcard image, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie hides cobbled streets to lose yourself in, artists' studios to discover (Andr\u00e9 Breton has his surrealist museum here) and views that make drones jealous. You'll come here to tick off a box on your tourist list, and you'll stay here to sit on a terrace, glass of wine in hand, listening to the bells tolling the hour to do nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

3 The Padirac chasm - a journey to the centre of the Earth (or almost)<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Descend 100 metres underground, board a silent boat and find yourself in a natural cathedral where stalactites flirt with the fantastic... It's a bit like Disneyland for geology fans. But don't panic: there's no dragon in sight, just the raw magic of nature at work for millions of years. Don't forget to book: the chasm is discreet, but highly sought-after. Before Banksy, there were our ancestors in the Lot. At Pech Merle, you enter a cave decorated with paintings dating back 29,000 years, in an almost sacred silence. Spotted horses, human silhouettes, hands blown on the rock... It's beautiful, mysterious and moving. And not (too) crowded. A journey back in time, without a VR machine or headset, just your wide eyes and a bit of imagination. Don't forget all the good tips, like free parking for St Cirq, but you'll need good legs. The town boasts two thousand years of history, but plays the medieval card. The unspoilt historic centre is a little jewel, made for exploring. It's great to get lost in its picturesque streets, but rest assured that all roads lead to the Pont Valentr\u00e9, one of the most beautiful bridges in France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a masterpiece of medieval architecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You don't have to go all the way to Compostela to feel the power of the route. It crosses the Lot like a peaceful old vein, punctuated by Romanesque bridges, secret chapels and unlikely encounters. You'll meet pilgrims, hikers, asphalt philosophers and self-seekers. And sometimes, you discover yourself, somewhere between two fields (GR65 Via Podiensis is 123 km between Figeac, Rocamadour and Cahors).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
